The core of the house is a small 13th century medieval Pele tower to which additions have been made at various times, but chiefly in the 17th and 18th century. The medieval portion of the building was originally a tower, 25ft square with walls 5ft thick, a vaulted lower storey and a newel staircase in one of the corners. The tower does not appear in any early lists of similar buildings, probably owing to its small size, however, a survey of 1734 refers to it as a 'strong tower of great antiquity'.
